Let me try to explain.... You are told that there are 60 animals on the farm and that 2/3 are pigs and cows. Therefore you know that 40 animals are pigs and cows (2x60)/3 = 40

(1) The first part then tells you that there are twice as many cows as there are pigs. Therefore Cows > 2 pigs.
This alone doesn't say much. You could have 5 pigs and 35 cows; 10 pigs and 30 cows; 2 pigs and 38 cows, etc...

(2) The second part tells you that there are more than 12 pigs. Again, this alone doesn't help you find the number of cows. There could be 13 pigs and 27 cows, 14 pigs and 26 cows, 15 pigs and 25 cows, etc....

Now if you take both together, you know that you must have: (1) Cows > 2 pigs and (2) pigs > 12
Remember that pigs + cows = 40

The only way for both conditions to be met is if you have 13 pigs (hence, more then 12) and 27 cows (more then 2 x 13). If you increased the number of pigs by just one, you would have more than 40 pigs and cows.

Hi Virflo, the stem says there are 40 pigs or cows. So your equation, cows + pigs = 40 will not hold.

My answer would be E, I am not able to arrive at C (which seems to be the OA).

Here is why i couldnt solve this question:

I couldnt understand English of the sentence:
2/ 3 are either cows or pigs.

I have taken this sentence as:
40 are either the number of cows of the number of pigs.
Thx again and (+1).

That is exactly what I thought as well. Either 40 pigs and 20 cows, or 40 cows and 20 pigs.

Can you confirm the OA?
