well its not about choosing...why is C correct?


Better not to explain why it is totally correct but to find big bugs of other choices.
In case, I'm not sure whether " the Oneida" is singular or not ..I can still cross B coz " was" contrasts with " they"
D is out coz it's awkward to say " the only ones"
E is out coz there's no point using past perfect tense here.
IMO, when you use compound noun five-nation, " league" is no longer a group, it's a sole entity.....so it's not suitable to use " the only one of ......League"

I striked off A and choose C for the following reasons :

1) Who : can we use who to refer to a group or a nation ( onieda)
2)even if we can use who, over here , who sided can refer either to group / nation. but it is the nation that sided not the group. since both are singular even the use of "that" may not help instead of "who" may not resolve this.
