I found these stories particularly helpful while I was studying for the GMAT, so I thought I would post my own.
Materials:
I used Kaplan self-prep online and I bought the additional questions from GMAC. I spent about 3 weeks utilizing the Kaplan study guide (they have a study plan they recommend) and then spent the last week doing all of the “hard” questions in the Kaplan quiz bank and the GMAC question bank. I studied 5-6 days a week (less some days, more some days, but always got something done on the days that I planned to study), and once I got in the groove, I found this quite sustainable.
Practice tests:
Kaplan Diagnostic: 690
Kaplan Practice 2: 720
Kaplan Practice 3: 680
Kaplan Practice 4: 690
Kaplan Practice 5: 690
GMAC 1: 700
GMAC 2: 720
Official Score: 750
Takeaways:
1. It is important to have solid fundamentals. Initially, my quant and verbal scores were all over the place, but by the end I was able to narrow down my scoring range.
2. While fundamentals are important, I made leaps my last week of study by only practicing hard level problems. If you have little time to study, I believe it is more important to focus on doing hard level questions and learning from your mistakes on those questions.
3. Make a word doc and write down all of your mistakes and important formulas (I have included my study guide as an example, I apologize for typos in it)
4. While I am definitely satisfied with my score, I would use the Manhattan guides instead of Kaplan (I’ve heard they are owned by same company) if I went through the process again because I have heard that the material is more challenging, and as stated above, I believe practicing with harder problems is more beneficial
5. GMAT club is an awesome resource for getting explanations to problems. They also have great question sets that are challenging
6. Do not get discouraged by poor performance on practice tests (I went from 720 to 680 and was very discouraged). I made up huge ground the last week of studying, and if you stay with it, things will start to come together as you get in more practice
7. I found IR very similar to the quant and verbal sections so I didn't spend much time on it. As for AWA, there are a lot of good templates/guides out there that help with getting a 5-6 and this isn't too time intensive either
Let me know if you have questions, I hope this was helpful.
