Interview with Linh Gilles Minnesota Carlson MBA Admissions Interview with Linh Gilles - Touch MBA Podcast
I just had my interview with Jennifer Fuhrman over skype. It lasted a about 30 mins
Basic question Why MBA, Why Carlson(i think i shot myself here !!!), Goals (ST/LT), Resume walk through, why current career choice, Extempore speech on any topic (2-3) mins then Q&A
I also interviewed via Skype with Pete. We started with going through my background: why I chose my undergrad university, why I chose my major, work experience. Then we got into goals and why MBA, why Carlson, etc. After that it was behavioral questions - tell me about a time you faced an ethical dilemma, how have you handled mistakes at work, how do you decide when to step up and assume a leadership role and when to let someone else lead. Then he asked me what the one thing I couldn't live without was, and had me talk for about 2 minutes on that topic. After that, it was my turn to ask questions. I'd been to campus previously, and been in touch with another AdCom member pretty extensively so I didn't have a ton of questions, but still asked probably 5-6. Overall, it lasted around 40 minutes and was a good experience. He also replied to the email I sent him after, which I thought was really nice of him.
Interview Experience 2
1) I finished my interview on 15th. The interview was more of a conversation type... just the normal questions- why mba? why carlson? tell me about yourself.. 2) The questions were usual like Why MBA, Why now, challenges at work, how do you approach an obstacle, how do you present a complex topic to strangers. They have added a new section to the interview where you have to talk/present on any topic for 2-3 mins. You will be given 1 min to prepare. 3) The interview questions were the usual: why MBA, why now, why Carlson, What will you give the community, have you faced any ethical dilemma, where else are you going to apply etc. These are questions I remember off-hand.. Try to interact with a current student or faculty.. They really like that you have taken some extra efforts to understand the culture of the university. 4) My interview had no surprises, it had just all the standard questions - Why MBA, Why Carlson, Walk me through yoru CV, Any situation where you faced conflict of interest, career goals etc. It had lasted 30 minutes.
Interview Experience 3
So I had my interview last night. The interview was quite conversational - he (AdCom) took great effort to get to know my background, experiences and the whole story... Questions were the usual ones: (maybe I am missing a few too..) - why engineering as undergraduate? - why MBA? - why Carlson? - short/long term goals? - strength - weakness - teamwork experience - ethical dilemma - how would I teach a totally new concept to someone? - 2-min extempore on a topic of my choice (he gave me 1-2 min to prepare) - which other schools have I applied to, and why? - questions for him Overall, it lasted almost an hour - and my interviewer was VERY friendly. I was not fully fully prepared for the 2-min extempore and maybe I stumbled at 2-3 questions more... but all in all it was a very nice experience!
Interview Experience 4
I was initially given an overview of the interview process. The skype interview was blind and lasted for ~35 minutes.
The questions asked were: a) Run me through your resume b) short term & long term career goals with a few follow up questions c) Why MBA? Why Carlson? Why now? d) Time when I had to convince a team member who was not co-operating e) Time when I was bored with work f) What would you do if you don't do MBA this year g) Which other schools you are applying to and why h) extempore speech - any topic for 2 minutes (1 min preparation time was offered) i) questions for the interviewer
Interview Experience 5
I had my interview with Dana Daniele a couple of days back. She is very cool and kept the interview as friendly as possible (We both smiled multiple times as we moved ahead with the interview ). It was for around 45 minutes.
Started with "Walk me through your resume", followed by a few traditional questions: Why MBA? Why Carlson? Why now? Strengths and weaknesses Then it went on some specific aspects of my profile. First and foremost thing is that you should know what all you have mentioned about self in your SOP, resume/CV, optional essay. By knowing I mean, they want to see if you actually are the person whom you have projected as in your profile and essays. So, be prepared with good number of situations where in you have proved yourself, As a leader As a team member As an eligible candidate for a B school etc,. Don't miss out on any single quality or word you have mentioned in the essays and resume. Expect one question, where they would give you a scenario and you will be asked to face it your way. Be very clear and specific on your post MBA goals, both short term and long term. Finally I was asked to talk for 2 minutes on any of my favorite topics. Once it is done, be prepared with some set of questions for interviewer. Altogether it was a great experience for me, this being my first admission interview. Bit tensed about result though. Should wait till Jan 15th.
Be confident and you will do it.
Interview Experience 6
Run me through your resume? Follow-up questions on work profile? Short term & long term goal? Why now? How can an MBA help you? Why Carlson? Leadership Style? Strengths and Weaknesses in a team setting? 2-3 situational questions on team building/setting What other schools did you apply to and why? Sell a product/idea of your choice in 2 minutes ( A situation was given) Time for my questions
Other Queries:
Obviously rankings should be taken with a grain of salt but its discouraging to see Carlson struggle to solidify itself while schools like Carey/Owen/etc work hard to improve their programs. Can't afford to tread water in this business. I'm fully aware Carlson isn't a top 10 program, but it would be nice to see some consistency.
I also just saw the rankings and am equally saddened to see the dip in ranking. It's too early to talk about the reason for the dip or the impact it would have. The companies that hire At Carlson are continuing to hire and in more numbers. This year unlike the past years a student got an internship offer from all the top 3 consulting firms and another got offers from 2 of them. Amazon And Ecolab have given more internship offers than in any other year. Few new companies are hiring From Carlson this year too and I'm sure that'll be the trend next year as well. One of Carlson's biggest drawback as far as rankings are concerned is its mid West salaries which are roughly 10 to 20k less than the salaries on the coast. This certainly reduces Carlson's score in addition to other factors. So rankings is certainly another number to consider a school, but my 2 cents is not to read too much into it. Talk to students and alums with backgrounds similar to yours and post MBA career aspirations similar to yours and see if their journey has been good and compared that with those of peers of other schools you are considering. Hope this helps.
Happy to help you with your questions. All the very best!
SCHOOL VISIT
Here are some highlights of the school visit:
1. Experiential learning - they are very proud of their Enterprise programs, which is well-deserved. Students stay in their chosen Enterprise for both years, and they get really valuable, immersive work experience that is helpful once they graduate. I think Carlson was either the first, or one of the first, business schools to do experiential learning engagements, and they're still one of the best at this. 2. Small class size - everyone was sure to emphasize that Carlson combines a small class size with the resources of a large university. Most students I met seemed to know everyone else - which is quite different from schools where the class size is several hundred people. It also seems like everyone is able to get as much (or as little) help from the GBCC as they want. 3. Practicality - I got the impression that Carlson does not mess around when it comes to classes and the job search. I'm confident that if I choose to matriculate, I will get a quality education and (provided I also put in the legwork) a job offer at the end of my experience. 4. Carlson reputation - the visit and event reaffirmed the strength of a Carlson reputation, particularly in the Twin Cities. They are building their reputation in other regions of the country and even internationally, but it is certainly still strongest in the TC area.
