In a bag with red, blue, green and yellow balls, the number of red balls is 3 times the number of blue balls. What is the number of green balls?

Step 1: Analyse Question Stem
- • Let us assume that the number of blue and green balls be x and y respectively.
• The number of red balls = 3x
Step 2: Analyse Statements Independently (And eliminate options) – AD/BCE
Statement 1: The number of blue balls is 5 less than the number of green balls.
- • According to this statement: \(x = y – 5⟹ y = x + 5\)
• However, we don’t know the value of x, so we cannot find y.
Statement 2: The number of red balls is 3/2 times the number of green balls.
- • According to this statement: \(3x = \frac{3}{2}* y ⟹ y = 2x\)
• However, we don’t know the value of x, so we cannot find y.
Step 3: Analyse Statements by combining.
- • From statement 1: \(y = x + 5\)
• From statement 2: \(y = 2x\)
• On combining the two statement, we get,
- o \(2x = x + 5 ⟹ x = 5\)
