% Increase =  \frac{Difference}{Smaller. Number}  x 100

% Decrease =  \frac{Difference}{Larger. Number}  x 100

Opening Value of stock X = $40 and closing value = $41

% Increase =  \frac{41 - 40}{40}  x 100 =  \frac{1 - 40}{40}  x 100 = 2.5%

Opening Value of stock Y = $25 and closing value =  \frac{3.5}{25}  x 100 = $28.5

% Increase =  \frac{28.5 - 25}{25}  x 100 = 14%

The difference in percentage points points for the 2 stocks = 14 - 2.5 = 11.5%

Please Note :  To calculate 3.5/25it is better to convert 3.5 to a whole number = 35/250 = 7/50 = 0.14

But in the sum above, this would not be required as you have 100 in the numerator which is divisible by 25, and so (3.5 / 25) * 100becomes 3.5 * 4 = 14

 o So, percent increase in stoke Y’s value =  \frac{3.5}{25}*100 = \frac{350}{25} =14 % 
• Therefore, the difference between percent increase in stoke Y’s and stoke X’s value  = 14 – 2.5 =11.5  percent points.
