Referring to the diagram below
Angle BAC = 180 - y (Sum of angles on a straight line = 180)
Angle BCA = 180 - x (Sum of angles on a straight line = 180)
In triangle BAC, 180 - x + 180 - y + 90 = 180 (Sum of angles of a triangle = 180)
Solving, we get x + y = 180 + 180 + 90 - 180 = 270
