In the figure above, if the coordinates of A are (1, 4) and the coordinates of B are (5, 1), what is the distance from A to B?

If we tak point C as (1, 1), we get a right angled triangle with base length = 5 - 1 = 4 and height = 4 - 1 = 3
By the pythagoras theorem
AC = Length of the hypotenuse = \(\sqrt{4^2 + 3^2} = \sqrt{16 + 9} = \sqrt{25} = 5\)
Alternately, you can use the distance formula between 2 points = \(\sqrt{(y_1 - y_2)^2 + (x_1 - x_2)^2} = \sqrt{(4 - 1)^2 + (1 - 5)^2} = \sqrt{3^2 + 4^2} = \sqrt{9 + 16} = 5\)
