GMAT #1It has been a long GMAT journey for me, but my score is stuck in the range of 710-720 even after 4 attempts (2 offline and 2 online). I started my preparation around a year ago in April 2020 and followed OG and Kaplan for my studies. I also purchased 2 additional Official GMAT Prep tests and was consistently scoring 740-760 on those tests after 2 months of preparation. I was pretty confident that my scores weren't much fluctuating so quickly fixed an appointment for an online exam. However, I was shattered when I scored a 720 Q51 V35. I know that while this isn't too bad of a score but being an Indian engineer, let's just accept that this score won't cut it. I decided to give my second attempt within the next three weeks as the concepts were still fresh in my mind.
GMAT #2This time I went to the test center and was more relaxed and focused than I was in my first attempt. I was hoping to see some improvement in my score, but I was disappointed to see the EXACT same score 720 Q51 V35 flashing on the screen. I accept this score as I improved on my IR by one point. But still, this was something that I wasn't fully satisfied with.
Run-up to my third attemptAfter getting the same score consecutively, I decided to take a break and resumed my preparation after three months. I knew that I had to significantly improve on my Verbal score and I started preparing for Verbal from SCRATCH. I took my friend's E-GMAT subscription and went through the complete CR and SC module. I grasped each and every concept, practiced questions, and clarified a lot of doubts through their forum discussions. This time, I could really understand the fundamentals that the GMAT focuses on and learned things that I had no idea existed before.
As I was gearing up towards my third attempt, I suddenly started noticing a change that I was not aware of until then! I was taking ~3 minutes to solve each CR question that really messed up my time management during practice and mocks. I knew all the concepts but did not know how to apply them and more importantly master them. Until this time, I was under the impression that SC was my weaker area but as it turned out, I was doing fairly well on SC (especially after the
E-GMAT course). CR was something that I couldn't answer within the time limit. I had very little time on my hand as round 2 deadlines were already approaching so I just decided to go ahead with the test.
GMAT #3I booked an online appointment and started off well in Verbal. But after 30 minutes, I started to panic as I had spent way too much time in the first half of the exam. So I kind of rushed through the second half and ended up guessing the last 4-5 questions. Again, here CR was the culprit. My mind completely went blank whenever I saw a CR question. I couldn't comprehend the stimulus and arrive at an answer in a reasonable amount of time. I couldn't solve questions that I would otherwise have in a normal setting. (I've noticed this as a recurring issue in all my tests). The quant was remarkably difficult this time so I wasn't expecting 51 there as I had in my last two attempts. Seven days later, I received a 710 Q50 V37.
GMAT #4I knew until this time that I really needed to focus on CR and my time management skills in the GMAT. So, I decided to just focus on these two things. I used to time every CR question and tried to do it under 2 minutes and if I couldn't, I just guessed and went ahead to train my mind. I practiced rigorously for 2 weeks and went for my fourth attempt. This time, I followed the clock and kept a time-check. Again my first half went great but I don't know why I spent WAY TOO much time on a few questions after that. AND boy, this triggered me immediately. And I went blank and completely messed up the second half. I again got a 710 Q50 V36.
I am devastated after writing the GMAT four times and not seeing an improvement. However, I know I can do better and am willing to put in the effort. The only thing I need to know is what I need to focus on to channelize my efforts going forward. I have attached the ESRs for both of my offline attempts and would love to see GMAT Club expert's opinion on them so that I can make a study plan. Please help!
