Hi Experts! I need your advice to help me improve my GMAT score. A summary of my GMAT Journey is mentioned below.
I have been studying for the GMAT for approximately 1.5 years. I initially started off assuming that my Quant was weak and that my Verbal was just above average (big mistake). I went heavy on Quant. Started building my Quant foundation using TTP. TTP certainly helped me to get to a decent level however, I consistently struggled on the questions that were above the 55% difficulty level range. I also took private coaching from GMAT Insight, which helped me bring depth in my thought process.
Alongside quant I was consistent with my Verbal Prep. Before my 1st attempt I had completed every OG question for SC, CR and RC several times. While doing a few verbal mocks, I realized that my speed and comprehension was slow. In certain cases I could not complete the 36 questions in the stipulated time.
Nevertheless, I gave my first attempt on the 31st of August 2021. I scored a 590 (Q47, V24). I ran out of time on the 32nd question on Verbal hence I had to guess the last 4 questions. I wasn’t pleased to see my verbal score because the lowest that I had ever scored on verbal was 31 on an
MGMAT practice paper. After about two weeks I recovered from my 1st GMAT defeat. I told myself that probably I didn’t have a good exam day. I couldn’t order my ESR as I had given the online GMAT. As I couldn’t analyze the number of errors on verbal, I made myself belief that probably the algorithm was not throwing enough hard questions. I booked my second GMAT attempt for the 5th of November 2021. This time I bombed it with a 550 (Q46 V21). Even on this attempt I had to guess the last 4 questions on verbal. After my second attempt I realized that my strategy for verbal needs a revamp. I learned new methods for SC,CR, RC. I had enrolled for the Verbal top one percent course by Sandeep Gupta. Learnt his OCTAVE method for RC. This method was helpful as I started focusing more on the purpose of the passage, contradictory words, tone of the passage, etc. In SC I realized that it’s always better to identify 4 wrong answers (3 by 2 splits or 2 by 3 splits), in CR I started making a mental note after reading every line whether what I read was a fact, premise or conclusion, etc. After my second attempt, I was hellbent to make structural changes while approaching any verbal question. These changes helped to a certain extent. Not that I started getting very high accuracy, but I could feel that I was reading every question actively. I picked myself up. Dedicated several hours to verbal. Gave my 3rd attempt yesterday (14th Nov 2021). This time I scored a 610 (Q48, V25).
My verbal timing on my 3rd attempt was the worst. I remember guessing the last 6 questions. My ESR is enclosed below. In the last section of verbal I got 75% wrong (the 6 guesses were all probably wrong). In the first 27 questions I managed to get 6 wrong. I need to improve my Comprehension, Reading Speed and need to stop re-reading. I tend read and re-read a-lot and that's where I lose time. I desperately need advice on Verbal. I want to restrict my total number of errors below 10. I’m targeting V35. Any tips that I can incorporate within the next 15 days?
