Draw a line, DZ, parallel to CB.
\(\angle DZA = 90\)
DZ = CB = 6
AZ = 12 - 10 = 2
\(AD^2 = AZ^2 + DZ^2\)
\(AD = \sqrt{6^2 + 2^2}\)
= \(\sqrt{40}\)
= \(2 \sqrt{10}\)
