How have you been preparing Poonam and how much have you been scoring in official mocks?

Also, whether it is V28 or V21, I am sure both these scores would be well below your target scores (V35+, which will get you into the 700 bracket). So, perhaps there are broader conceptual issues than just a time-management thing.

Hi EducationAisle,

Thank you for sharing this. I agree about some other issues causing the score drop. I think I will need to solidify my Verbal Knowledge by practicing more tests.

Answer to your questions above:
As the time is very limited for me, I did not complete official mocks. Please see details about my preparations below:

Due to time constraint, I decided to focus solely on knowledge instead of time management. In the first test, I spent most of my time preparing for Quant section. Hence, I spent less than 15 hours on Verbal prep. As I need to achieve my target score quickly, I booked the second test on the first available time slot, which is 17 days after the first one.

On the first day of preparation (16 days before the 2nd test day), I looked up multiple study guides on GMAT Club & Forum. Comparing between going through tons of practice tests and getting knowledge in Verbal, I chose the latter approach. Approximately, I spent around 30-40 hours on prep during this period. (After my working hours and on weekend) Since the time was very short, I finished reading all the Verbal content from Official GMAT Guide around 1 day before the test. After finishing my readings, I worked on 30+ CR & RC Verbal questions. Along the way, I also tried to solved at least 1-2 OG questions per day (Both Quant & Verbal).

Thanks again

I would like to ask if you could give me any suggestions.

Hopefully, the ESR will provide some insight as to what happened. If you feel time management was an issue, consider using time markers. For RC, learning how INFERENCE questions work could also be useful. For SC, memorizing relevant idioms could also boost your performance.

Oh...looks like you were able to spend just around 15 days on Verbal preparation.

Poonam, there are obviously some gifted souls who can just walk into the examination hall completely cold, and still get a 40+ in Verbal.

For most of us however, preparation and perseverance are the keys to scoring well. It's clear that lack of time did not allow you to be well-prepared.

When are you planning to appear in GMAT next?

Hello GmatTutorKnight ,

Thank you for your response. Time management was the issue in my first test. So, I tried to improve it on the second test. I believe part of the issue could be focusing on the clock too much. Appreciate the tips. I'll definitely improve all sections. I actually able to identify more idioms from practice questions - guess I'll need more  .

For the ESR, I'll share it below.

EducationAisle , Definitely agree that putting more effort on the preparations should help with the score. I'll keep practice and practice. I'm planning to take the next one mid March or earlier.

Side-by-side comparison - ESR from first & second test --> Please see the attached file.

Please feel free to share your thought or advice.

Looking at my own ESR, I think CR and SC definitely need lots of improvement. During the second test, incorrect rate in Section (1/4) is really high. Then, average difficulty went down in Section (2/4).

Hi poomam01,

I'm sorry to hear that Test Day didn't go as well as planned. When these types of score drops occur, the two likely "causes" involve either something that was unrealistic during practice or something that was surprising (or not accounted for) on Test Day. In addition, many GMATers spend 3 months (or more) of consistent study time before they hit their 'peak' scores (and that includes taking practice CATs/mocks at regular intervals to gauge your skills and the specific areas that you need to work on to improve), so it's likely that you just have not put in enough time and effort to score higher yet. Before we discuss any of those potential issues in more detail, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

1) How long have you studied in total? How many hours did you typically study each week?
2) What specific study materials have you used so far?
3) What is your overall goal score?
4) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

While the ESR doesn’t provide a lot of information, there are usually a few data points that we can use to define what went wrong on Test Day (and what you should work on to score higher). Since you purchased your 2 ESRs, then I'll be happy to analyze them for you - but I'll need to see the FULL ESR for each attempt, not just the Verbal part of it). If you would rather not post them publicly, then you can feel free to PM or email them directly to me.
