oh man. DON'T get a scooter. My brother was in town this week (he has lived in NYC for five years or so) and we were talking about transport.

His friend got a scooter and everyone fully expects them to be killed hitting a pothole, or by a taxi weave. Front wheel on a scooter < size of NYC pothole.

Now that my brother has a brownstone (at least thatтАЩs what its called in Boston) in Brooklyn he is talking about getting a vespa...his fianc├й is strongly against that because of the taxis and all the crazy drivers (and pedestrians). In Europe everyone rides them and people are used to them...cities over here would be a lot less congested if people road vespas and drove mini cars.

Seems like great way to get aroundтАжespecially if you have a place to store one. Personally I would be terrified of riding one around any major city though. I do have a co-worker that rides one in during the summer, it gets like 70mpg or some other insane amount and they are small enough to park almost anywhere.

I tried for the most appropriate image, rather than what they're like now.

It's true that they are hugely popular for commuting in Europe. London is teaming with them, and they are driven by maniacs, but motorists are pretty safe here and the road surfaces are good.

Obviously, I say they are maniacs as I am cycling, and they put me at risk a lot of the time.

You've never been to China, guys. Vespa has been copied and multiplied a billion times over as a piece of crap called Mulan and it's an extremely **** version of Vespa to say the least.

Try riding your bicycle in Beijing, and you'll think your European vesparians are angels.
