New Shorter GRE Test Announced - Goes Live Sept 22, 2023The ETS just announced that they are rolling out a new test format that is shorter than both the original GRE and the new GMAT Focus.
The test has 3 sections: Quant, Verbal, and Essay. This change is similar to the one that GMAT has made a few years ago when they went from 37 Quant to 31 and 41 Verbal to 36 questions in that it is simplifying the exam.

The reasons are obvious - the GRE test volume is 50% down from the peak and it never hurts to have a shorter test, esp now that the GMAT is working on the "Focus" format of the test. The timing seems to be terrible for the GMAT however, since the test is no longer shorter than the GRE an is a source of confusion and contention. The launch date is not clear yet and we only know that the new GMAT is launching sometime in Q4 2023 while the GRE has a clear transition date.
There are no changes to the GRE scoring - your scores from past exams will be comparable to the new test and vice versa. It seems the new format will make GRE only more attractive even though it lacks the acceptance of the GMAT.
The shorter GRE has been planned for a few years (and is released along with the shorter TOEFL which is going live in July) but the timing is pretty bad for the GMAT, which is introducing many changes (latest
update from May 30th GMAC summit is here)
