Sharing my journey of GMAT(too lengthy but then this process of prep has been so too): Need help to improve from 595->660-700+
Journey: I initially started my prep in September 2023, considering the timeline from then until now seems bit too much. I was planning on attempting GMAT in January of 2024, but heard the pattern had changed frok Classic to Focus (this also disrupted my then baseline score of 675 on first classic mock). As I was in last year of my college, had to juggle both internship and college work so GMAT prep took a backseat for like 6 months.
Current Prep: Finally, started prepping again and getting acquainted with GMAT new syllabus and process. Being a working professional, prep was limited to 2-3 hours in the evening after work with goal set to attempting GMAT questions of 25Q, 25DI and 25V timed from GMATClub. This prep also was fluctuating according to my workloads( had set a goal for September then January) but had to delay the first attempt both the time due to workload issues (this also resulted in multiple uses of the GMAT FE GMAC mocks which were later rendered to be repetitive and not reflective of my scoring too). Also, I had noted shortcuts and tricks for GMAT and was revising them on a daily basis for last week. Kept a note of the difficult and unique questions I encountered on GMATClub. In the prior month of February, got a respite from work from the 10th of February so seized the opportunity and scheduled first GMAT on 1st March.
Last week- Solved OG mocks for the last time just to set the tone. Revised notes and unique questions. The day before the exam, maybe watching too much videos on GMAT on youtube caused anxiety?
Exam: Scheduled the appointment for 3 at the test center. Entire week was normal but got jitters the day before the exam. The exam day was the same. Did not solve any questions prior to the exam on exam day and day before. Chose the order of Q->DI->V as Verbal was my strongest and hence kept it last to balance out my score or that I would not have issues with Verbal at last but Quants and DI seem to be weaker with Quants the weaker of the 3. The first question of Quants hit me like a landslide and blindsided me for initial 25-30 seconds. Was able to solve it but panicked for the rest of the exam. Hence, the Q-2 which was an easy solve also took me 3 minutes. Recovered later but seems that these initial questions were the ones that cost me.
Verbal and Quants did not seem to be difficult but were time consuming and I was second guessing and overthinking all the time leading to time issues. Yet, completed all the questions but guesses were made on a few on initial Quant questions and some DI questions.
Attached below is the copy of the official score report and required references in the reports.
Planning for 2nd attempt in June of 2025(fear of the exam seems subsided for now).
Please help with this to help achieve the desired score of 660+ (720+ equivalent on the classic).
Also,
1. Should I change section order from
Q->DI-B->V to
V-B->Q->DI or any other?
2. Should I consider any training institute/counsellor/online course?
3. I am currently planning to apply for 2026/27. Will I be able to send my GMAT score to admission programs in two/three years from now?
Referring this as my current approach.
Included in your GMAT registration is the option to send your Official Score Report to up to five (5) programs for free within a 48-hour period. After this period, or if you want to send your score to more programs, you can send additional score reports for a fee.
4. Also, would like to know which programs can I apply to with this score of 595 realistically as admissions based on GMAT FE scores seem to be fluctuating?
5. Also, I do need to know that whether sectional scores and sectional percentiles affect applications?
Key Takeaways- I do not feel concepts are an issue here. Questions, especially from Quants seemed a little too much hovering initially in the 700+ difficulty level which took me aback and seemed to shake my confidence throughout the test.
Do let me know if any clarifications required. Also, is my desired score(660+ at least) achievable based on my current state?
Any guidance is appreciated!!!
