I dont know what is wrong with option E...Cause to me first subordinate clause in addition.....fossil, modifies Mary's contribution, not Mary herself, as A suggests.

Well, sub-verb problem. Here subject is Mary leakey and not Mary leakey's contribution. As you see the sentence start from "in addition to her contribution", here her implies mary leakey and not mary leakey's contribution. So the first step is to eliminate A and B...
E is the correct answer in this case.
