I tried solving the equation below and got x = –3 or x = 1/2. Could someone please try solving this equation and let me know your answers. Thanks!


Solve | x – 3 | = | 3x + 2 | – 1.

x-3 = 3x+2 -1 => 2x=-4 => x = -2

x-3= -3x-2-1 => 4x=0 => x=0

3-x= 3x+2-1 =>4x=2 => x=1/2

3-x = -3x-2-1=> 2x=6 => x=3

is this right way?

Solve | x – 3 | = | 3x + 2 | – 1.

The answer is x = {-3, 1/2}

See my image below for the silver bullet to solve most absolute equations.

Do you know why I put +/- after I took out the absolute value? If not, I will come back and explain.

Could someone please explain the as to how x = 1/2 for numbers between -2/3 and 3.

Why do you put negative sign in front of (x-3). That is, -(x-3) = (3x+2) - 1
