Check here:
if-x-is-a-positive-integer-is-the-remainder-0-when-3-x-1-is-divided-109075.html

Worth noting though that such type of pure algebraic questions are no longer a part of the DS syllabus of the GMAT.

DS questions in GMAT Focus encompass various types of word problems, such as:

  • Word Problems
  • Work Problems
  • Distance Problems
  • Mixture Problems
  • Percent and Interest Problems
  • Overlapping Sets Problems
  • Statistics Problems
  • Combination and Probability Problems

While these questions may involve or necessitate knowledge of algebra, arithmetic, inequalities, etc., they will always be presented in the form of word problems. You won’t encounter pure "algebra" questions like, "Is x > y?" or "A positive integer n has two prime factors..."

Check GMAT Syllabus for Focus Edition

Hope it helps.

So, basically you can ignore that question!

Can anyone help me out with this question?
An urgent message had to be delivered from the house of the Peshwas in Pune to Shivaji who was camping in Bangalore. A horse rider travels back from Pune to Bangalore at a constant speed. If the horse increased its speed by 6 km/h, it would take the rider 4 hours less to cover that distance. And travelling with a speed of 6 km/h lower than the initial speed, it would take him 10 hours more than the time he would have taken had he travelled at a speed 6 km/h higher than the initial speed. Find the distance between Pune and Bangalore.
(A) 120 km
(B) 600 km
(C) 720 km
(D) 750 km

C?

ST= (S+6)(T-4)

ST=(S-6)(T-4+10)

Two eons solve you will get S=30 and T=24. IMO C

Let X = speed ; [ D/x-D/x+6] =4 and [ D/x-6 - D/x+6] = 10

Solving that we get x = 30 put in either equation get D = 720

I have tried that method but it’s pretty lengthy. I was looking for something less time consuming

ST= (S+6)(T-4) => ST= ST-4S+6T-24 => 4S-6T=-24

Second eqn after opening bracket gives 6S-6T=36

Subtract both eons you will get 2S=60 => S=30

Substitute in any eqn you will get T=24
