Re: Premila: Everybody who works with your quality-assurance process has [#permalink]
Alright, let's break down the conversation and argument here:

Premila emphasizes the importance of having a written explanation for their quality-assurance process, even if everyone has internalized it.

Graciela agrees but asserts that they don’t need to document it because they have a procedures manual from the Internal Programs department that they can use. Graciela makes a claim that all the steps in their process are identical to the process used by Internal Programs.

Let's find the underlying assumption in Graciela's argument.

Quote:
A. at least some people who currently work with Graciela's quality-assurance process have not thoroughly internalized all aspects of the process

This doesn't connect with Graciela's main point, which is about using the procedures manual.

Quote:
B. all steps in the quality-assurance process used by the Internal Programs department are explained in the procedures manual used by that department

This seems to hit the mark. For Graciela's claim to hold, the procedures manual must document all the steps. If any steps are missing from the manual, then they can't rely on it entirely.

Quote:
C. at least some of the steps described in the procedures manual used by the Internal Programs department are likely to be modified in the near future

The argument doesn't concern future modifications, so this is not the core assumption.

Quote:
D. everyone who has thoroughly internalized all aspects of Graciela's quality-assurance process has done so as a result of reading the Internal Programs department's procedures manual

This is not necessarily assumed. Graciela's main point is about the content of the manual and not how people learned the process.

Quote:
E. if everyone who works with the Internal Programs department's quality-assurance process had thoroughly internalized the process, Internal Programs would not have developed a procedures manual

This is a generalization that doesn't directly address Graciela's point about the equivalency of the two processes and the existence of the manual.
From our analysis, the most fitting assumption for Graciela's argument is:

B. all steps in the quality-assurance process used by the Internal Programs department are explained in the procedures manual used by that department.

With this assumption, Graciela can confidently rely on the procedures manual as a complete guide for their quality-assurance process. I hope that clears things up!

Premila: Everybody who works with your quality-assurance process has thoroughly internalized all aspects of it, but we also need a written explanation of every step in the process, just in case someone else has to apply the process.

Graciela: I agree. However, we don't need to spend any time documenting it, because we already have the procedures manual used by the Internal Programs department. All the steps in our process are the same as in the quality-assurance process used by Internal Programs.

Graciela's argument depends on the assumption that

A. at least some people who currently work with Graciela's quality-assurance process have not thoroughly internalized all aspects of the process

B. all steps in the quality-assurance process used by the Internal Programs department are explained in the procedures manual used by that department

C. at least some of the steps described in the procedures manual used by the Internal Programs department are likely to be modified in the near future

D. everyone who has thoroughly internalized all aspects of Graciela's quality-assurance process has done so as a result of reading the Internal Programs department's procedures manual

E. if everyone who works with the Internal Programs department's quality-assurance process had thoroughly internalized the process, Internal Programs would not have developed a procedures manual

P says that we need a written explanation for all the quality assurance steps in case someone ELSE needs it. G says all the steps are already written/the same as those in the IP manual.

What's an assumption that G has?

(B) is a nice answer. Basically, even if the STEPS are identical in the IP manual, it doesn't necessarily mean the reasoning behind each of the steps is ALSO written.

Re: Premila: Everybody who works with your quality-assurance process has [#permalink]
Graciela's argument is based on the idea that there's no need to spend time documenting their quality-assurance process because it's identical to the one used by the Internal Programs department, and they already have a procedures manual for that. To support this conclusion, Graciela must assume that all the necessary information is already present in the existing manual. Therefore, the correct assumption is:

**B. all steps in the quality-assurance process used by the Internal Programs department are explained in the procedures manual used by that department.**

Graciela's argument relies on the assumption that the existing manual covers all the steps in the process, which makes it unnecessary to spend additional time documenting it.

Additional thought (hopefully additive to the above).

If we were to negate Option B "all steps in the quality-assurance process used by the Internal Programs department are NOT explained in the procedures manual used by that department". This would absolutely break Graciela's argument and weaken the argument.
