Official Explanation

Consider each of the following statements about banana production and exports. For each statement indicate whether the statement is supported.

The country with the median rank based on exports of the countries listed is the same as the country with the median rank based on production.

Sorting the table by the export rank, you find that Vietnam has the median rank based on exports. Vietnam is also ranked 9 in world production, which is the median for that category.

Answer: True

The country ranked first in production produces about 104% more tons of bananas than the country ranked last in production of the countries listed.

The country ranked first in production is India, which has 110 (100,000) metric tons. You don't have to include the 100,000 because all the numbers are in terms of 100,000's. The country ranked last in production is Bangladesh, with 6.25. Simple subtraction gives you a difference of about 104, but this is a percent change question because it asks for percent more. So you have to apply the percent change formula:

%\(change = \frac{difference}{original}*100\)

The difference is 110 - 6.25 = 103.75. The original number is 6.25 because we want to know how much more India produced than Bangladesh. Put the numbers in the formula:

%\(change = \frac{difference}{original}*100\)

%\(change = \frac{103.75}{6.25}*100 = 16.6*100 =1660\)%

The percent change is 1,660%, not about 104%.

Answer: False

Each of the South American countries in the table exported more than half of the bananas they produced.

The South American countries in the table are Ecuador and Colombia. Ecuador produced 48.1 and exported 25.4. Divide 25.4 by 48.1: \(\frac{25.4}{48.1} =.53\). 0.53 is more than half. Colombia produced 18 and exported 12.4. Divide 12.4 by 18: \frac{12.4}{18} =.69[/m]. 0.69 is also more than half, so this statement is true.

Answer: True

Sajjad, in export category vietnam is ranked 10 while in production it is ranked 9, moreover, the in export section data for one country is missing which could rank 9. So in this case should the first question not be false?

One little typo can change the whole story, I fixed it. Please sort the table again; it is all set now.

Thank you!

You have to use "Metric Tons" columns in both production and export.

I don't think that's a mistake as countries not listed in the table can have those rankings. Exports for instance are missing a lot of rankings as well.
