The ratio of two quantities is 3 to 4. If each of the quantities is increased by 5, what is the ratio of these two new quantities?

it will can be understood by example....

Say x & y are original quantities ....ratio = x/y = 3/4...here we important thing to note is we are interested in actual increase of x & y and not the ratio 3/4....

let x=3 & y=4...ratio = x/y = 3/4.......x+5/y+5 = 8/9 = 0.89
let x=9 & y=12...ratio = 9/12 (= 3/4)...but x+5/y+5 = 14/17=0.8235

Hence cannot be determined...OA E

to do this...

assume common factor for the two is t,

then the two numbers can be written as 3t and 4t. and (3t + 5)/(4t + 5)..since t is not known, we can't determine what the ratio is
