RC General Questions

Need some help with RC general questions.
I just picked up the RC section & am facing issues with the general questions, questions like:
1) what is the main purpose of the passage / point the author is trying to make 2) What is the role of the third paragraph / how is 2nd paragraph related to 3rd etc...
I am a non native English speaker, when I read the passage I am able to understand pretty much everything except the MAIN POINT. I picked up MGMAT RC book, It is pretty good & has god concepts tips & tricks.
But when I answer the general questions, I don't seem to have confidence answering them, I am usually able to eliminate 2 out of 5, but the rest 3 I find hard to shortlist........I think this is also one of the reasons I often get the specific detail questions wrong.
I follow every thing the book tells to.....make a headline list/skeletal sketch while reading...etc.......but that doesn't seem to be working. Any suggestion to improve the comprehension of the passage........especially to answer general questions????

Truth is, there is no sure shot way to tackle this. MGMAT is close to what others have to offer. Also, check the RC tips on this forum by Gin and others. For RC, the only way I see is more and more practice and following a specific style and consistently sticking to it.

I'm also not a native English Speaker, I'm working on Reading Compression atm as well.
My experience dealing with General Question is to re-read the first sentence or even the first paragraph again (after you have finished one time reading the whole passage).
Usually after reading the whole passage you have the rough idea of what the paragraphs are about and their functions, all you need is that central core idea that you haven't graph. And voila, reading again the first paragraph will usually connect all the ideas of other paragraphs together into one cohesive idea.
There might be tricky answers such as: - The author propose a theory - The author state a generalization
For theory, usually the author says something along the line of "there is new research...." For generalization, that is usually something that has already been done and confirmed and the author more or less makes a report about it.
Hope that help.
