Hi aditya111,

The idiom is "both X and Y"
E uses "both X as well as Y"

It's an idiom probelm.
Hope this clarifies, let me know

Re: Both the complexity of the phenomenon known as extinction and the vast [#permalink]
What is the source of this? Too easy for MGMAT. doesnt look like GMAT PREP

(A) and the vastness of the biosphere, having prompted many scientists to call for a large increase in the number of biologists working both
incomplete sentence
(B) and the vastness of the biosphere has prompted many scientists calling for a large increase in the number of biologists both working
have not has
(C) and the vastness of the biosphere have prompted many scientists to call for a large increase in the number of biologists working both
looks good to me
(D) as well as the vastness of the biosphere have prompted many scientists to call for a large increase in the number of biologists who both work
as well as - no idiomatic
(E) as well as the vastness of the biosphere has prompted many scientists to call for a large increase in the number of biologists who work both
as well as - non idiomatic

Re: Both the complexity of the phenomenon known as extinction and the vast [#permalink]
I am having a slight problem in understanding ing modifiers could some one help me in OA A ?

Both the complexity of the phenomenon known as extinction and the vastness of the biosphere, having prompted many scientists to call for a large increase in the number of biologists working both in the field and in laboratories to clarify the relationships among the planet's many endangered life-forms.

what does it mean to say having prompted ? Also i eliminated this answer simply because i could find a verb for subject 'the complex....biosphere'..

Yes, the most evident problem with A is that it not a sentence at all! There is no verb in the entire sentence.

(A) and the vastness of the biosphere, having prompted many scientists to call for a large increase in the number of biologists working both - not a sentence
(B) and the vastness of the biosphere has prompted many scientists calling for a large increase in the number of biologists both working - subject verb agreement - both X&Y need plural
(C) and the vastness of the biosphere have prompted many scientists to call for a large increase in the number of biologists working both - Correct
(D) as well as the vastness of the biosphere have prompted many scientists to call for a large increase in the number of biologists who both work - idiom issue
(E) as well as the vastness of the biosphere has prompted many scientists to call for a large increase in the number of biologists who work both - idiom issue

This question is based on Subject-verb agreement and Idiomatic Usage.

The correlative conjunction ‘both’ is used twice in the sentence. This conjunction is idiomatically paired with the conjunction ‘and’.

However, in Options D and E, the conjunction is incorrectly paired with the phrase ‘as well as’. Furthermore, at the end of the underlined portion, the pair of conjunctions is used again.
In Option D, there is a lack of parallelism at the end of the sentence too because the first conjunction of the pair, ‘both’ is followed by a verb(work) and the second of the pair ‘and’ is followed by a preposition(in).
For these reasons, Options D and E can be eliminated.

Option A is only a sentence fragment as there is no verb in this option. The participle form ‘having’ is used in this option and since a participle does not act as a verb unless it is paired with an auxiliary verb, the sentence is incomplete. So, Option A can be eliminated.

Option B contains an error of subject-verb agreement. The singular verb ‘has’ does not agree with the plural subject “Both the complexity of the phenomenon known as extinction and the vastness of the biosphere”. This option also contains an idiomatic usage error. The verb ‘prompted’ is usually followed by an infinitive, not a participle. The correct usage would have been – “prompted many scientists to call for….” So, Option B can be eliminated.

Option C maintains subject-verb agreement. The plural verb ‘have’ agrees with the subject. This option also uses the appropriate pair of conjunctions ‘both-and’. Therefore, C is the most appropriate option.
