Hello all,
I Request for your advice on preparing a strategy for preparation.
Firstly, a quick background of mine. I have taken a full length CAT to understand where I stand and scored 540 (Q32, V31). My Target score is 720. For now, I plan to give my GMAT during the end of July. I know this score improvement looks like a HUGE task. I am also in a full time job, so - I want to use my time efficiently.
After analyzing the results I was able to find my weak areas. My first focus in on improving quant score. My Top three areas of concerns in quant are - Number Property, Geometry and Overlapping sets. I have now revised these concepts from
MGMAT books and solved the problems. I have also solved all the homework problems in Veritas Prep book. I am maintaining an
Error Log. I am also reviewing all the questions that I have solved.
Now my question is
1. How do I measure my improvement in these topics?
2. How do I know if my current understanding and ability to solve is good enough for my target score?
3. What is a good Idea -
a) Not move to a next topic till the current topic is completely mastered OR
b)Start with one subtopic, solve related problems, review them, move to the next topic. After going through all subtopics, give another CAT to see the improvement
4. When is the right time to start practicing on OG problems? Is it -
a)Immediately after finishing a Sub-topic OR
b) keep it towards the end - as I approach nearer to my actual Exam
5. Any other thing you feel is important to keep in Mind while I practice.
Do let me know in case you want any further information. I look forward to hear from you!
PS: In case you know of any thread where these questions is discussed, please share it with me
Hi,
First of all, IMO, there is no definite strategy that works for everyone. People usually find out what works best for them as they move ahead in their prep. But still, I'll try my best to answer your questions. Please note that these answers are based on my experience with the GMAT.
1. How do I measure my improvement in these topics?
You can measure your improvements simply by going through practice problems ranging from easy to hard. If you start getting majority of the questions right, you are on your way.
2. How do I know if my current understanding and ability to solve is good enough for my target score?
This can be measured by taking GMATPrep tests. You get two free tests, and if you want more, you can buy them on mba.com. The Official practice tests are the best way to measure your ability. Usually the scores on actual GMAT are in line with the GMATPrep tests. I would advise you to take them wisely and seriously. Take full tests each time including the essay and IR. Do not take these exams very frequently during your prep because if you do not learn from your mistakes and work on your weak areas, you are simply going to get the similar results.
3. What is a good Idea -
This is the part where different things work for different people. For instance, I never dedicated a full day to either quant or verbal. I used to do few questions of each type PS, DS, SC, CR, RC every day and then used to start giving additional time on my weak areas. This way, i was maintaining my mastery level for already mastered topics and was mastering new topics as well. However, I have come across many posts in which people followed the one topic mastery approach and it worked for them. So, its upto you to decide which route you want to take. I would suggest that you try both of these approaches and chances are, you will get to know by yourself.
4. When is the right time to start practicing on
OG problems?
In my opinion, yo can start practicing
OG problems as soon as you are done with understanding concepts from
manhattan books. you can, for example, do 10 practice problems from each area (PS, DS, SC, CR, RC) everyday and can also do problems from other sources. This way, you will be in touch with official flavor throughout your prep. Please note that the official problems in the
OG (especially the one at the beginning) are very easy and thats why you need to do problems from other sources as well to have a mix of easy and hard problems every day. Please make sure that there are fresh Official problems left for you to do even during the last 2 weeks of your prep. You might wanna buy more official problems (for example, Question pack 1).
5. Any other thing you feel is important to keep in Mind while I practice
--Please take notes whenever you make mistakes or
--Please review the explanations not only for the wrong answers, but also for the right answers. This approach has so many advantages. For example, you might get to know a simpler method to do a problem or you might get to know why other options are clearly wrong.
--For Verbal, during the last month of you prep (or atleast the last 2-3 weeks), stick to the official problems.
--Practice every day even if it is for an hour.
Hit Kudos if you find my post useful.
Good Luck..!!
