Hi all
I am writing this as I am in a situation where I need an urgent advice. I will try to be as brief as possible:
In light with just discovering that the classic GMAT will only be offered until end of Jan 2024 (I know .. I just knew 2 days ago!), I am in the following situation:
To give you some background, I started preparing for GMAT since early September 2022 .. was planning to apply for round 3. Anyway, my study period was from Sep 2022 up to early April 2023 with one month in which I didn't study due to heavy workload and sickness. I scored 510, but a big part of it was because the center was pretty much horrible, and because I was more focused on content during my prep and less on practice (again horrible mistake). Mocks were giving 550 to 560. I still submitted the MBA application and did not manage to get accepted, which I knew about around May 2023. After that, I got busy for personal reasons as well as changing my work assignment within the company I work for. I was planning to retake the GMAT and reapply, but work kept me busy until today! I thought that 3 to 4 months to refresh my memory and practice more this time should be enough to improve 100 points, as I am aiming for 600 or 620, not more (based on classic gmat benchmarking). But, then I saw that GMAT format changed and GMAT focus will ONLY be offered in Feb and March 2024. I honestly thought that the exam should be offered till May/June 2023, as I read in multiple forums. Anyway, I see that the added section is DI, I remember I never liked the Integrated reasoning section, never studied properly for it and I was always running out of time while solving it in the mocks and in the official exam. I never focused on practicing for it either and I was constantly getting 2 in the section. I also used to pick it as the 3rd in the order, and when I reach that section, my mental fatigue prevails. So, I am discouraged that now it counts within the score EQUALLY .. on top of that, SC was something I didn't mind because there was a methodical way to solve it. Geometry as I have engineering background, it wasn't my nightmare either. So I do not see how I can score better in GMAT focus, especially that it's so new and there are general concerns that all GMAT prep companies are still learning and working to redevelop their sources! let alone the lack of cultural familiarity of the business schools with the new GMAT, which might not help them read the scores fairly compared to the classic GMAT.
So, at this stage I am wondering if I shall resume the preps with the GMAT focus version, and try my luck with this new DI section or switch completely to GRE. Please note that I don't know anything about GRE and I chose to do GMAT before as I didn't see myself memorizing 1000 vocab words, as it is simply not my strength. I tried to solve some 600 level DI questions yesterday from GMAT club and they didn't look horrible. I answered correctly the 3 sets of MSR questions I attempted, although it took time. So, I am not sure if it's a matter of prep and practice for the DI, especially that the DS there is more of a verbal DS .. So, which path do you recommend, based on the above information provided? I intend to sit for the exam by mid March 2024 the latest.

If you're thinking about potentially taking the Focus, perhaps take an Official Focus mock to see how you find it. You could also try this with the GRE.

At this point I believe we do have essentially two exams: the GMAT and the GRE
The statement above looks obvious. Yes we do have. However, I am stressing the meaning: with the Focus we know almost two completely different exams.
Before there was some overlap because a certain similarity for example in the RC section but now we do not have
Whereas the GMAT maintained long readings and the verbal side is even more emphasized, the gRE barely shows you a long reading made of \(\approx\) 400 words. Usually you do have only medium reading and NOT all the time.
DI looks somehow doable but I would like to see under pressure mountains of information to organize and interpret
Students are reporting that they practiced really hard questions form MGRE or other sources, then to see on the real test at most a 650 gmat (old) level questions and scored 170
As for the vocabulary is just a myth: if you have strong english all those words are already in your knowledge. If not: the meaning of the sentence is king. Knowing words is important but NOT pivotal. People think that if you know tons of words they are able to solve questions. This is not necessarily true: if you do not get or grasp the meaning how might you solve the question itself ?
