Shared vocabulary is a critical component of any high-performing organization or institution. All organizations have a handful of terms and acronyms that are key to their functioning. A school district, for example, might regularly refer to RTI (response to intervention), differentiation, and benchmarking. If some teachers understand RTI in one way, and other teachers think the term means something else, chaos may ensue. District leadership needs to clarify the meaning of the acronym or term as they intend it to be used.
The same is true for any corporate entity. Does everyone in the office understand what you mean when you refer to scalable actions, competitive advantage, or core competencies? Are they all on the same page when they talk about success or excellence?
The meanings are not always in the individual terms, but rather in the organization’s overall interpretation of those terms. If employees transfer in from a different company or even a different division, they may arrive with a different understanding of the meanings of some critical terminology regularly used in your office.
Some executives clarify terms at the beginning of staff meetings, just to ensure that everyone is speaking the same language from the onset of a project. Others publish key terms and definitions in an office handbook, which serves as a reference guide for everyone in the department. Successful teamwork and meaningful professional dialogue depend on an agreed-upon set of concepts and terms.
