The average (arithmetic mean) of 11 numbers is 10. When one number is eliminated, the average of the remaining numbers is 9.3. What is the eliminated number?

A. 14
B. 15
C. 16
D. 17
E. 18

Solution

    • Let the eliminated number be n.
    • Now, \(\frac{(the\space sum\space of\space all\space 11 \space number)}{11}= 10\)

      o Or, \((the\space sum\space of\space all\space 11 \space number) = 110\)

    • Also, \(\frac{((the\space sum\space of\space all\space 11 \space number) -n)}{10} = 9.3\)

      o Or, \(110 – n = 93 ⟹ n = 110 – 93 = 17\)
Thus, the correct answer is Option D.

Theory

➡ Average = Sum of all the Values / Total Number of Values
➡ Sum of all the Values = Average * Total Number of Values

The average (arithmetic mean) of 11 numbers is 10

Sum of 11 numbers = Average * 11 = 10 * 11 = 110

When one number is eliminated, the average of the remaining numbers is 9.3

Sum of remaining 10 numbers = Average * 10 = 9.3 * 10 = 93

Discarded number = Sum of 11 numbers - Sum of remaining 10 numbers = 110 - 93 = 17

So, Answer will be D.
Hope it helps!
