FROM Expartus Admissions Blog: The Best Online MBA Programs |
The internet is changing the way we learn, and MBA programs are no exception. Online MBAs offer flexibility and cost efficiency that brick-and-mortar MBA programs can’t compete with. Although there are downsides to online MBAs too, like fewer networking opportunities, online programs are trending up overall. If you’re looking to work an MBA into a hectic schedule, the flexibility of online MBAs could be exactly what you’re looking for. According to Financial Times, the top five online MBA programs globally are: The-Best-Online-MBA-Programs 1. IE Business School The top online MBA program, IE Business School’s Global MBA is a 15-month program involving 3 weeks in Madrid and 1 week at an international location, with most of the work being done online. Online classes are taught using a blend of videoconferencing and online forums. The courses are structured in a way that will promote collaboration between classmates and allow for remote networking opportunities. IE first launched their online MBA in 2000, and they have developed an extensive online learning platform that includes mobile apps. Overall, if you’re looking for a rigorous online MBA program in a format that still allows you to interact with faculty and classmates, IE is a good bet. As the top online MBA worldwide, IE has a rigorous application process. You’ll have to take the IE Global Admission Test, the GMAT, the GRE or some combination thereof. If you pass the first round of the admissions process, you’ll be invited to do an interview online or in person. Overall, IE is probably the closest you’ll get to the online equivalent of a top traditional MBA program, so you should treat the application process accordingly. 2. Warwick Business School Like IE’s online MBA, the Warwick Distance Learning MBA entails spending a minimal amount of time on campus, including a five-day elective module taken at a time of your choosing and a couple “Warwick Weeks” where you’ll head to the school for network events among other things. The majority of the program is spent online. At the core of Warwick’s online learning platform is a virtual classroom environment in which you will discuss topics with other students. Each subject you take is overseen by a subject tutor who facilitates discussions and tracks your progress. Altogether the program takes three years to complete. Because it’s so spread out, it’s ideal if you’re looking for a top online MBA but don’t have time for programs as fast-paced as IE. Warwick has several ways for you to get in touch to learn more about the program, including online chats and open days. You should take advantage of these to learn as much about the program as possible. With online MBAs it’s especially important to do your research, and Warwick makes this easy for you, so don’t pass up the opportunity! 3. University of Florida Hough Graduate School of Business University of Florida’s Online MBA can be either a one-year or two-year program. The accelerated one-year program is designed for students with strong prerequisites. The two year program has no prerequisites and allows students to choose one of four concentrations to explore more in depth: Entrepreneurship, Finance, International and Marketing. Electives in each concentration can be taken as four-month online courses, one-week in person courses or, in some cases, global immersion courses. Students in both the one-year and two-year programs return to campus for the weekend every four months. Online lectures are not scheduled for specific times, which has the upside of more flexibility but the downside of less interaction with your classmates. If you’re looking for an extremely flexible online MBA that lets you customize your course of study, University of Florida should be on your radar. To find out more about the program, consider attending an info session online or in Florida. The online MBA isn’t considered distinct from the traditional MBA, so the two programs share the admissions events and application. As with the traditional MBA, you’ll have to take the GMAT and be ready to do an interview after you’ve submitted your application. 4. Northeastern University D’Amore McKim School of Business Northeastern University’s Online MBA is built around a curriculum consisting of 13 core courses and 5 electives. You can choose from eight concentrations or even opt for an online Finance/MBA dual degree. Over the course of your studies, you can also choose to do campus residencies or even international residencies. Generally, these different options that let you extend the program based on your interests are what make Northeastern’s online MBA stand out. The application process is fairly straightforward as far as MBA programs go. You don’t even have to take the GMAT. 5. Indiana University Kelley School of Business Indiana University’s Online MBA bills itself as “the most flexible online MBA available from a top-20 business school.” Indeed, the program offers several ways to tailor your plan of study to your interests. If you want to learn about politics, there’s the Washington Campus program. If you want to gain hands-on experience in emerging markets, there’s AGILE. And if you want a dual degree, there’s a whole slew of other online programs to choose from. Therefore, it’s not that the basic curriculum itself has a lot of flexibility built into it – there are far more core classes than electives. But these extra opportunities mean you can extend the curriculum to go in depth on particular topics that matter to you. You’ll only need two years work experience to apply to Indiana, but you do need to take the GMAT. To find out more about the admissions process and the program itself, you can also go to one of the info sessions Indiana holds across the United States. Different online MBAs have very different emphases, so be sure to research each program you’re interested in carefully. For example, some schools, like IE, prioritize an online learning environment that leads to interaction between students. Others, like Florida, allow you to carefully customize your track of study. But all of the best online MBAs can give you the sort of flexibility in the way you learn that’s possible only in the twenty-first century.
