(500-300)* 365 = 73000 would ideally survive in a year ;
50,000+73000 = 123,000

Think of it as humans. There is a birth rate (for babies), a death rate (for the entire population), and child mortality rate (for deaths of children).

This question provides information about birth rate and about death rate. The 300 deaths is for the entire population.
So, like humans, the population is increasing.

50000+365(500-300)=50,000+73,000=123,000
