The dolphin, one of nature’s most intelligent animals, has been known to cover its snout with ocean sponges to better forage for food, in effect creating their own farming equipment.

'Their' to refer to singular 'the dolphin' is incorrect. Also , as per the meaning of this sentence, the dolphins cover their snouts and this covering action turns snouts into a farming equipment. This doesnt mean they make 'new' farming equipments (this point will be used to eliminate choices B,C and E).

A) in effect creating their own farming equipment
Incorrect as stated above.

B) so that it creates its own farming equipment
Incorrect as stated above. Additionally, "so that..." means that the reason why dolphins cover their snouts is to create a farming equipment. This is illogical.

C) so that they create their own farming equipment
Incorrect as stated above. Additionally, "so that..." means that the reason why dolphins cover their snouts is to create a farming equipment. This is illogical.

D) in effect creating its own farming equipment
Correct.

E) creating effective farming equipment
Incorrect as stated above.

Dolphins cover their snouts and this covering action turns their snouts into farming equipment is the correct meaning. Based on this logic we can see that choices B , c , and E are incorrect choices
incorrect usage of ' their ' in options A and C
Incorrect use of ' so ... that ' in options B and C makes them incorrect
option E goes out because of incorrect meaning

Though I marked the correct option but the question was the tricky one.

The first Decision Point that you should analyze on this problem is a relatively easy one: the choice between the pronouns “its” and “their.” Since “the dolphin” is singular, the plural “their” is wrong, and you can safely eliminate answer choices A and C.

The choices between the remaining three are a bit more nuanced and difficult to leverage. They deal specifically with illogical meaning and the question of whether dolphins really “create equipment.” Of course not! Farming is an agricultural process that takes place on land, and farming equipment refers to a known set of tools and machines created and employed by humans. To be logical, the sentence must be metaphorical rather than literal; thus, an answer choice that reads “…so that it creates its own farming equipment” is illogical, and one that says “creating effective farm equipment” is even worse; not only are they illogically creating farming equipment but it’s very effective farming equipment! Only answer choice D makes the expression a metaphor and is thus correct.

Illogical meaning can be subtle, but remember that you don’t need to detect meaning errors in a vacuum; you will always have answer choices that you can compare, keeping meaning in mind. The Decision Points question that you should ask on this problem is: Why did they give a choice of “in effect” vs. “so that”?

Hi all ,

Still I am unable to digest the fact that option E is incorrect .

Option E can act as a modifier here so why we are eliminating this ?

Option (D) , in effect creating —-what does that mean
