The floor of a company's storage room has an area of 20,000 square feet. If the floor is in the shape of a square, approximately how many feet long is each side?

(A) 140
(B) 450
(C) 500
(D) 1,000
(E) 5,000

Let a side of square-shaped floor = \(s\)

\(s^2 = 20,000\)

\(\sqrt{s^{2}} = \sqrt{20,000}\)

\(s = \sqrt{10,000*2}\)

\(s = 100\sqrt{2}\) , and \(\sqrt{2}\) approx = \(1.4\)

\(s = (100)(1.4)\)

\(s = 140\)

(A) 140
(B) 450
(C) 500
(D) 1,000
(E) 5,000

Since area of a square = side^2, we have:

20,000 = side^2

√20,000 = side

We see that the length of each side of the square is √20,000 = √10,000 x √2 ≈ 100 x 1.4 = 140.
