Tricky one...

(1) The can is 5 inches tall.

h = 5

No info on width of stripe or height of stripe

Not Sufficient

(2) g = 0.5

No info on height of the stipe

Not Sufficient

(1) and (2) g = 0.5 and height of the Can = 5

Still no info on the height of the stipe

Not Sufficient

Answer: E

From statement 1:

Only height is given. No info about width of the strip or the radius of the can.
Hence insufficient.

From statement 2:

Only width is given. No info about height or radius of the can.
Hence insufficient.

Combining both: Still no info about radius of the can.
Hence insufficient.

E is the answer.

Question states - stripe of "g" inches around .........

So once I know the value of g and height of stripe...Can I not calculate the area of rectangle (stripe)?

You just know the width of the stripe. No info about the height of the stripe.

Not Quite.. This one is tricky. Notice the question says "What is the total surface area of the stripe?"

So we need to know the height of the stripe. Not the height of the label.

Don't beat yourself up, I doubt the real GMAT will have wordplay like this. But it's a good lesson to learn to always read very carefully.
