The major economic difference between standard 4-stroke engine and rotary is that rotary engines are less fuel efficient, but theoretically cheaper to build. However, currently only a few rotary engines are made and costs are consequently higher than for 4-stroke engines. Disagreements over the relative efficiency of then two systems are therefore related not just to their fuel efficiencies, but also to the way in which future production volumes will impact manufacturing costs.
