I will go with "C"

It can be solved just with the scanning.

First of all, "center of its ritual" ... here its right since it refers to court
Therefore we can ignore choice B and D as they contain "center of his or her ritual"

Secondly, " center of its ritual, was the greatest patron of the arts"..... was is not required here because it is still a description of the king. Hence we can ignore choice A
Therefore "and" should be the proper usage and it is used in C and E.

Between C and E
choice C contains --- "cynosure of this culture, which is standing—or, more"...... "which" refers to culture and it can not be sitting or standing. Therefore it is wrong

And hence we left with C... which is according to me is the right answer.

I also thought that 'intending' does not suit well here.....
So Chose C over all other options.
