My answer is (A). It took me 42 seconds.

(A) A careful reading of this version does not reveal any glaring errors. The comparison between "between 2000 and 2010" and "in any previous" is parallel and sensical. I focused on the comparison part in other options.

(B) "they" in "than they did" does not have sensible antecedent. The corrected version is "than the price saw" or "than it did".

(C) "what it did" cannot be compared with "the price of gasoline", nor can it be compared with "between 2000 and 2010".

(D) "in any ten-year period" include the ten-year period between 2000 and 2010.

(E) See (B).

IMO (A) is the answer.

The price of gasoline saw more fluctuations between 2000 and 2010 than in any previous ten-year period.

A) saw more fluctuations between 2000 and 2010 than in any previous - the sentence is grammatically correct here and the tense is correct.

B) saw more fluctuations between 2000 and 2010 than they did in any previous - 'they' is ideally not required here. Especially considering the fact that gasoline is not a person.

C) saw more fluctuations between 2000 and 2010 than what it did in any previous - 'what' is just making no sense here.

D) fluctuated more between 2000 and 2010 than in any - 'any' can refer to any 10 year period; whether it be past or future.

E) fluctuated more between 2000 and 2010 than they did in any - same as D.

In a parallel universe (A) is wrong for "the prices" can not "see" anything by themselves. But, I found some articles online where prices indeed can see fluctuations. P.S. Learned something new today.

But, the second closest choice (D) does not make a lot of sense either as the phrase "any other decade" also encompasses the decade from 2000-2010.

I selected option A as answer but can’t figure out a clear reason why C is wrong. ‘It’ refers back to price and ‘did’ refers back to saw. Right?
