The thin rectangular sheet of metal shown in the figure is 8 inches wide and x inches long. An open box is to be made by cutting a 2-inch square from each corner of the sheet of metal and then folding up the sides. If the volume of the box is to be 48 cubic inches, what is the value of x?

A. 6
B. 8
C. 10
D. 12
E. 14

The sides of the box are:
\(width = 8 - 2 - 2 = 4 inches\)
\(length = x - 2 - 2 = (x - 4) inches\)
\(height = 2 inches\\
\)
Hence, volume of the box = \(4 * (x - 4) * 2 = 48\)
\(x - 4 = 6\)
\(x = 10\)

Hence, the answer is C

The height of the cubic box will be 2 inches.
The width of the cubic box will be 8 - 2*2 = 4 inches
The length of the cubic box will be x - 2*2 inches
Volume of the box = (x - 4)*2*4 cubic inches
48 = (x - 4)*8
6 = x - 4
x = 10 inches

Thus, the correct answer is option C.
