1. Determine probability of chosing first slate rock = number of slate rocks / number of total rocks
=> 15/45 = 1/3

2. Determine probability of selecting second slate rock (note: since we have already chosen one rock and there is no replacement there are only 45 - 1 = 44 rocks left, whereof 14 are slate rocks)
=>14/44

3. Multiply the probabilities of the two selections to determin probability to select two slate rocks in two draws
=> (1/3)*(14/44) = 7/66

Total no of rocks is 45

Probability of selecting 2 slate rocks ( Of 15 slate rocks ) out of 45 total Rocks is

15C2/45C2

=> 105 / 990

=> 21/198

=> 7/66

Hence answer will be (D) 7/66 :-D :lol:

There are 15 slate rocks, 20 pumice rocks, and 10 granite rocks randomly distributed in a certain field. If 2 rocks are to be chosen at random and without replacement, what is the probability that both rocks will be slate rocks?

A) 1/3
B) 7/22
C) 1/9
D) 7/66
E) 2/45

The probability of getting two slate rocks is 15/45 x 14/44 = 1/3 x 7/22 = 7/66.

Answer: D
