Hi,

I would go with C for this one. A good question IMO.

A is wrong because "scientists" wrongly modifies the preceding clause and "the discovery" should rightly modify since it is the thing "that promises"

B is wrong because of wrong S-V agreement. "the discovery"(singular) "possesses" the ability and not "possess"

D is wrong because of multiple flaws.. lost parallelism is major.

E is wrong because "promising" a verbing wrongly modifies "sight".

Regards,
Dom.

In what promises to be an alternative to corneal transplantation in treating blindness caused from damage to cornea, scientists from city-based L.V. Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) in collaboration with U.S. scientists claimed to have discovered potent stem cells in the eye that possess the ability to restore lost sight.

the scientists cannot modify or refer to promises to be alternative.
stem cells promises to be alternative

the given sentence is wrong due to above reason

B. In what promises to be an alternative to corneal transplantation for treating blindness caused from damage to cornea, the discovery of potent stem cellsin the eye by scientists from city-based L.V. Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) in collaboration with U.S. scientists possess the ability to restore lost sight.

the discover of cell ............seems to possess the ability to restore lost light
this does not make sense
Also stem cells promises to be alternative not discovery

C. In what promises to be an alternative to corneal transplantation for treating blindness caused from damage to cornea, the discovery of potent stem cells possessing the ability to restore lost sight in the eye by city-based L.V. Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI)’s scientists along with U.S. scientists, offers hope.

This option looks structurally correct if not U.S. scientists and offers hope is separated by comma.
promises and offers hope are same in meaning thereby causing redundancy.
offers hope is a run on sentence which should be connected or refer to discovery
Also stem cells promises to be alternative not discovery

D. Scientists from city-based L.V. Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) in collaboration with U.S. scientists claimed to have discovered potent stem cells in the eye, which possess the ability to restore lost sight, and promising to be an alternative to corneal transplantation in treating blindness caused from damage to cornea.

and promising ruins everything
It looks like scientists claimed to have done two things
1. discovery
2. promising to be an alternative(his does not make sense at all.)

E. Scientists from city-based L.V. Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) in collaboration with U.S. scientists claimed to have discovered potent stem cells in the eye that possess the ability to restore lost sight promising to be an alternative to corneal transplantation in treating blindness caused from damage to cornea.

This solves all problems without adding more.
Stem cells in eye..........posses the ability to restore sight
thereby promising t o be an alternative

I hope I'm right
correct me if I'm wrong

Hmm...Good question.

Here is my take...

A. In what promises to be an alternative to corneal transplantation in treating blindness caused from damage to cornea, scientists from city-based L.V. Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) in collaboration with U.S. scientists claimed to have discovered potent stem cells in the eye that possess the ability to restore lost sight - Wrong Modifier after Comma. In-Treating does not seem good, For treating is better. 'That' seem to modify eye.

B. In what promises to be an alternative to corneal transplantation for treating blindness caused from damage to cornea, the discovery of potent stem cells in the eye by scientists from city-based L.V. Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) in collaboration with U.S. scientists possess the ability to restore lost sight. - SV agreement error. Does doscoovery possess the ability ? Definitely not.

Correct

- Referent of which is ambiguous. Parallelism error. Had 'Promising' been parallel to either Claimed or 'possess', it would have been wrong. As, in first case, it would seem that scientist are promising and in later case, stem cells/eye is/are promising instead of discovery.

- Promising seems to describe sight, making it wrong.

Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) in collaboration with U.S. scientists claimed to have discovered potent stem cells in the eye that possess the ability to restore lost sight.

Error analysis:

In what promises to be an...........is a prepositional modifier that seems to refer to verb ...claimed to have....

Followings are the example of prepositional phrase modifier

1. He works in the evening

2. The book is kept on the top of table.

So, A is wrong.

Error Analysis:

the discovery of potent....................possess the ability......... seems to suggest that discovery is possessing the ability.

Correct Choice. here, In what promises to be an...........prepositional phrase modifies discovery.

Error analysis:

1. and promising to be an alternative ....... is a separate clause without any subject. So, wrong.

E. Scientists from city-based L.V. Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) in collaboration with U.S. scientists claimed to have discovered potent stem cells in the eye that possess the ability to restore lost sight promising to be an alternative to corneal transplantation in treating blindness caused from damage to cornea.--

Error analysis

promising to be ........... seems to modify lost sight and it is wrong.

placement of .......that possess the ability ...... relative clause is ok as it seems to modify potent stem cells. Overall, this choice is incorrect.

Hi Nick90,
Why do we have a comma before offers hope. having the comma between the discovery of potent stem and, offers hope, this makes the structure- the discovery of .....US scientists a non-essential modifier. So, the word offers lacks a subject

Can we eliminate A, D and E for using ‘claimed’? Claim seems more apt instead
