(1) United States carriers paid a total of $9.4 billion for the jet fuel used in 1983.
price of the fuel is unknown. insufficient to determine the quantity of the fuel used

(2) United States carriers paid an average (arithmetic mean) of $0.90 per gallon for the jet fuel used in 1983.
we know the price,but we don't know the amount of money spent. insufficient

1 & 2 together ,we've total money spent and the rate per gallon
$9.4bil/$0.90 ,enough to calculate the amount of fuel used was over 10bil gallons

Did United States carriers use more than 10 billion gallons of jet fuel during 1983?

(1) United States carriers paid a total of $9.4 billion for the jet fuel used in 1983.
(2) United States carriers paid an average (arithmetic mean) of $0.90 per gallon for the jet fuel used in 1983

can someone please post the combined equations for both the statements

Sum of terms = (average of terms) x (number of terms)

Sum of dollars paid = (average dollars paid per gallon) x (number of gallons)

Combining statements:

9.4 = (0.90) x (G)

G = answer to the question
