Jess is running her first ultra-marathon (100 miles) with her friend Kerri. Jess completes the first half of the race at an average pace of 5 miles per hour, but Kerri started fast and reached the halfway point at an average pace 1 mile per hour faster than Jess’s pace. Over the second half of the course, Kerri maintains her pace, but Jess finishes strong, completing the second half at an average pace 2 miles per hour faster than Kerri’s pace.

Jess speed = 5 m/h (1st half) & 8 m/h (2nd half)
Kerri speed = 6 m/h
Time taken by kerri to reach half distance (50m) = d/s = 50/6 = 8.33 hrs
Distance travelled by Jess in 8.33 hrs = s*t = 5 * 8.33 = 41.65
Kerri is ahead of Jess = 50 - 41.65 = 8.35m
Time taken by Jess to run entire race (100m) = 50/5 + 50/8 = 16.25hrs
Distance travelled by Kerri in 16.25hrs = s*t = 6 * 16.25 = 97.5
Jess is ahead of Kerri = 100-97.5 = 2.5m
So the approximate answers are 8 and 3

For the First half of Distance i.e 50 km- velocity of kerri(vk1)= 6 m/hr, velocity of Jess(vj1)= 5 m/hr
For the second half Distance i.e 50 km- vk2= 6 m/hr, vj2= 8 m/hr
to cover first half of distance Kerri will take less time i.e tk1 = 50 m/6(m/hr)= 25/3 hr
distance covered by Jess when kerri already covered first 50 miles = vj1*(25/3)=5*(25/3)=125/3=41.67=42 m(apprx.)
miles Kerri is ahead=50-42=8 miles
Kerri started second half of journey but Jess still in first half for time = 8 m/5(m/hr)=1.6 hr
Distance covered by Kerri in 1.6 hrs= 1.6* (vk2)6 miles/hr= 9.6 miles------(dk2)
now speed of Jess increased to 8 miles/hr
50 km covered by jess in time=50/8=6.25 hrs
Distance covered by Kerri in 6.25 hrs= 6.26*vk2= 6.25*6=37.5 miles
and we know kerri already covered (dk2)=9.6 miles distance
