does "that" after like refer to the entire statement before the comma or only to "the distribution of stars"?

Hello Blair15,

We hope this finds you well.

To answer your query, here, "that" refers only to "the distribution of stars".

We hope this helps.
All the best!

Doesn't the line compare the distribution of starts in the milky way's central bar here compared to the distribution of spiral arms that surround the central part, the comparision that we are trying to make over here?

egmat Kindly please confirm.

Hello @nayas9,

We hope this finds you well.

To clarify, the correct answer choice - Option C - compares "The distribution of stars within the Milky Way's central bar" with "that within the spiral arms that surround the central bar", wherein "that" refers to the main noun of the preceding phrase "The distribution of stars"; in other words, Option C correctly compares how stars are distributed in the "central bar" with how stars are distributed in the spiral arms.

Remember, "those" and "that" can be used to refer exclusively to the main noun of a noun phrase.

We hope this helps.
All the best!

The distribution of stars within the Milky Way's central bar, like the spiral arms that surround the central bar , has been deduced from the orbital behavior of celestial bodies visible from our solar system.

A. the spiral arms that surround the central bar
B. that of the spiral arms surrounding the central bar
C. that within the spiral arms that surround the central bar
D. the spiral arms the central bar surrounds
E. the distribution of stars within the spiral arms that surround the central bar

MartyTargetTestPrep can you help here? Is this is a good question ? Can you explain why C is correct ?

MartyTargetTestPrep can you help here? Is this is a good question ? Can you explain why C is correct ?
In this question, three choices are justifiable, (B), (C), and (E).

In a well written SC question, only one choice really works. The others have clear flaws.

If we do our best to determine what the author meant to say, we could possibly justify choosing (C) over (B), because (C) keeps the focus of the sentence on the distribution of stars.

However, for all we know, the distribution of the arms has also been deduced from the orbital behavior of celestial bodies. So, (B) could be justified as well, and (E) is certainly not incorrect.

So, this question is not a good question.
