A rectangular sheet of paper of length L units and breadth W units is to be cut into the least possible number of equal squares of side S units such that the sheet is totally used up. If L, W and S are integers and L and W are both greater than 1, what is the value of S?

This is a question about gcf and lcm.
The main equation to have in mind is gcf(x,y)*lcm(x,y)=x*y.
using the variables of the question, gcf(W,L)=S, so S*lcm(W,L)=W*L
1) L*W=63 => lcm(W,L)*S=63. Not enough.
2) lcm(W,L)=63. Not enough.
1&2) 63*S=63 => S=1. Enough.
