I believe there are two types of voters here in favour of exemption and in favour of altering the exemption. Hence both statements even together seem insufficient.

Given: 3600 registered voters. Who are further divided into 2400 Democrats (D) and 1200 Republicans (R).

lets denote male and female as M and F respectively. Further supporters of tax exemption be denoted with s and non supporters as n.

DM has two sub sects DMS and DMN. Similarly, DF also has DFS and DFN.
RM has two sub sects RMS and RMN. Similarly, RF also has RFS and RFN.

we need to find: number of female voters voted in favour = DFS + RFS.

STATEMENT 1:
(1) The number of female Democrats who voted in favor of the exemption was three times the number of female Republicans who voted in favor of the exemption.

DFS = 3* RFS

This statement is NOT SUFFICIENT to answer the question.

STATEMENT 2:
(2) The 150 male Republicans who voted in favor of altering the exemption represented 2/5 of all Republicans who voted in favor of altering the exemption.

RMS = 150 and this 150 = 2/5 ( all republicans who voted in favour= RMS + RFS).
150 = 2/5 * (150 + RFS).
solving it we get RFS = 225.

Standalone this statement is also NOt SUFFICIENT.

Combining Statement 1 and Statement 2

DFS = 3* RFS
RFS = 225.

Hence DFS = 3*225 = 675

total female voters who supported the exemption = DFS + RFS = 675+ 225 = 900.

Hence answer C

You're considering "in favour of exemption" same as "in favour of altering the exemption" if they both are the same then ofcourse both statements together are sufficient. But I infer them to be different as in "in favour of altering the exemption" to be non supporters denoted by n

Let me break the question not entirely but the crux to get a hold. There is a referendum means a public hearing where people are welcomed to respond to a problem by a ballot vote or voice vote etc. Here it’s ballot voting. 🗳️. The question in place is “ altering the property tax exemption”.

There is a property tax. Secondly, there is an exemption clause which was in place earlier. Say for example senior citizens and veterans are exempted from paying the property tax. Or exempted from paying a particular percentage of property tax which remains applicable to all.

Thirdly, altering the property tax exemption(PTE) - alter can be either increase, decrease, new conditions imposed, existing benefits withdrawn to name a few.

There will be two groups of people one who favours altering PTE and another which opposes PTE. Within this groups as per question they belong to two parties Democrats and Republican. And amongst them, they are further divided into male and female.

No where it’s mentioned - a single party favours or opposes PTE.

In the light of the above mentioned scenario I request u to read once more the question.

Hi Dereno, Thanks for the reply it was helpful.

"In favor of the exemption" and "in favor of altering the exemption" are not necessarily the same thing.

"In favor of the exemption" suggests that voters support keeping or introducing the exemption as it currently exists.
"In favor of altering the exemption" suggests that voters want to change the exemption, which could mean reducing, increasing, or modifying it in some way.
Since the problem does not explicitly state whether altering the exemption means increasing or decreasing it, we cannot assume that those who voted in favor of altering it were necessarily in favor of the exemption itself.

This distinction is crucial and is why Statement (2) does not provide direct information about those who supported the exemption.

Maybe lets wait for the OA. Maybe I'm wrong, thinking too much.
