Airlines are often chosen by consumers based on criteria such as on-time performance, lost baggage rates, and other service metrics. The government provides data on these metrics for major airlines. However, if the government were to provide data on all airlines, consumers' choices might be different. This is because data on many smaller regional airlines are not included in the government's reports, and these smaller airlines tend to have much worse service quality.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

(A) The service quality of major airlines, as reported by the government, would change significantly if data on smaller regional airlines were included.

(B) Consumers would be less likely to choose major airlines if they had access to data on the service quality of all airlines.
(C) The government intentionally excludes data on smaller regional airlines from its reports to protect the interests of major airlines.
(D) Smaller regional airlines have little incentive to improve their service quality because their data is not reported by the government.
(E) The service metrics reported by the government are the only factors that consumers consider when choosing an airline.
The answer key says (B).

It’s poorly worded and actually contradicts the argument on a close reading.

Smaller regional airlines perform worse.
Adding their data might change choices — presumably away from those bad-performing smaller airlines.
So if anything, consumers might be more likely to choose major airlines, not less.
So (B) is not only not required, it's probably false under the argument’s logic.

(E) is too strong in its assumption.
"The service metrics reported by the government are the only factors that consumers consider when choosing an airline."
That’s a bit too strong. It says “only factors.” The argument doesn't need that strong an assumption.
What the argument needs is that these metrics significantly affect consumer decisions, not that they’re the only thing consumers care about.
So (E) is too extreme to be necessary.

Ig - The real assumption is that consumers’ choices are influenced by these service metrics, and would change if they had more complete data — but that’s not well expressed in any option.

I agree that B. is not the best answer and the quality of this question is a bit suspicious.

The best answer is likely E or potentially A which is unclear at the moment. I’m not sure what the relationship between the date would be why it would change an a which probably eliminates A.

I have gone ahead and tag this question as poor quality so people stay away from it unless someone thinks I am mistaken.

Hi BB there are several other questions which needs your attention. Can you arrange a system to do a quality check before appearing as public on forum, because these types of questions are actually making us questions about the authenticity of questions even though the margin of these type question appearance is less.
