I am wondering if admissions will call my boss if i apply to Columbia. I know he will write a good letter of recommendation, but he can say something negative on the phone if he is having a bad day. I don't trust it. Any thoughts?

Sounds odd... You trust him to write a letter but not talk on the phone?
That being said, I have not heard of recommenders being called.

they can call a recommender if need be or if they have any suspicions about the validity of your LOR, that being said, calls to recommenders are extremely rare.
