You are right!
I forgot all the little quirks with Majority. It is actually more complicated than MGMAT puts it (not sure if I am over complicating but that's how I was taught to deal with these) The plural vs singular is defined by the article (A vs. The)

I've spent about the last 30 minutes trying to clarify this point, and I'm basically just confusing myself.

But it basically boils down to:
If you're talking about "A/The majority of the students..."
Are you indicating the many individual parts of the totality? Is your meaning roughly the same as "Most of the students"? If so, the noun is plural. Otherwise singular.

For #2, the rule is that if the object of the preposition is singular, use a singular verb, and if the object of the preposition is plural, use a plural verb. (that's with None)
Majority is a collective noun, so it is singular.

Hey bb,

Majority can go either way, since it's a quantity word (Chapter 3 MGMAT SC).

Quantity phrases ("majority of ____", "minority of ____", "half of _____") take the singular/plural of the ______.

The majority of the senate IS hungry.
The majority of students ARE broke.

Hi,

Slight confusion..
Would that be
The majority of students ARE broke
OR
A majority of students ARE broke ?

Based on this rule: https://www.grammarphobia.com/blog/2007/ ... rules.html

#1 should be "IS"
#2 is correct
