but we need memorize this right. There is no shortcut

If I may add to others view.

regarding memorizing the tables, it does save time if you memorize. I know it doesnt happen overnight, but there is a way. For instance, I took all the numbers and started singing a song (From a bollywood movie - will upload the movie one day :) ) . That does work. My mum used to teach me multiplication tables that way.

If memorizing isnt your cup of tea, the second best way to sort this out is to used vedic maths 2 number multiplication

* 45 (put it one below another)
-------------------
multiply left most | multiply diagonal | multiply right most
2*4 | 2*5 + 3 * 4 | 3 * 5

8 | 22 | 15

carry over digits from right to left

8 | 22 +1 |5 => 8 | 23 | 5
8 + 2 | 3 | 5
10 | 3 | 5

Answer is 1035
