Hi, I have a problem I'm not sure of the best way to attack algebraically:

If a + b - c = d, and if a - b + c = e, then a =

A. 2(d + e)

B. d – e

C. (d + e)/2

D. d-2e

E. e-d

Any input/help would be appreciated.

Add both equations:
a + b - c = d
a - b + c = e

a+b-c+a-b+c=d+e
2a=d+e
a=(d+e)/2

Ans: "C"

Add both the equations and solve.

therefore 2a = d+e
a = (d+e)/2

Hi All,

This question can also be solved by TESTing VALUES.

We're told that....

A+B-C = D

A-B+C = E

IF...
A = 2
B = 3
C = 5

D = 2+3-5 = 0
E = 2-3+5 = 4

We're asked for the value of A, so we're looking for an answer that equals 2, when D = 0 and E = 4. There's only one answer that matches...
