Very Cool: This tool predicts your cahnces of admission!!!

Question

I just came across this. Very popular on the law school forums is this excel spreadsheet that allows you to put your info into this template and it shows you your chances of admission at top programs.

Sorry OP, but this tool is really only useful for a laugh. It gave me >95% chance of admission at every single school in the US, including Harvard, Stanford and Wharton. I can only assume it did so based on my GMAT (760), relatively high undergrad GPA (3.6) and "prestige of undergrad" (Univ of Chicago). In reality, I've been dinged from three schools (not even HSW, which I didn't apply to), and accepted at one so far (Michigan).

Honestly, it seems that the MBA admissions process is so opaque and apparently subjective, I think any tool like this is impossible to make. I personally like poets & quants write-ups on estimated chances for certain types of candidates, though even in those cases I think the percentages they give are wildly inflated and perhaps assume that the candidate writes the great american novel in his or her essays.

definitely agree with you on that..There is a lot of things this "predictor" does not take into account. How could it? I still think it is pretty interesting though and thought I'd share it

I think the predictor is more accurate with Part Time MBA's than for Full Time because of these reasons:

1. PT students generally come from the same area as the school.
2. because students come from the same area, it is more likely that a larger percentage of students come from the same 10-20 companies than what you'd see in a FT program.

The other issue is that the data given in mbapredictor used the US News rankings instead of the most recent Businessweek data, which showed the incoming 2011 class.

Just based on my personal observations and anecdotes, and echoing the sentiments of the posters above me, I believe that it is really hard to objectify near conclusively whether a person will be admitted at a particular school or not. Granted certain metrics have numeric data, such as average GMAT score, certainly help to create an idea, there are far too many outliers and qualitative measurements that make such a tool more than likely a poor indicator of admission at a particular program.
