Hey all,
I have been studying the last few months and took my first GMAT practice CAT with manhattan GMAT...610. I'm crushed to say the least. I get almost every question right when I'm studying, and my biggest problem during the exam was without a doubt SPEED - I found myself almost out of time at only the halfway point during the quant section.
I'm aiming for a minimum of a 720. I have the luxury of time, as I'm planning to apply next fall.
I don't really consider myself an underachiever of a "bad test-taker" per se - I'm a physician and just finished my fellowship, so test-taking under pressure is nothing new. I've scored over 90th percentile on every standardized exam I've ever taken, but I'm incredibly discouraged by this score.
Advice? I've seen some of the resources for practice exams here. What have you guys found to be the best strategies to improve your speed?

Well, I would do two things:
1. Take a mock test without time limit. Still try to solve the questions as quickly as possible but put an emphasis on solving them. Afterwards, look at each question for which you need more than 2 minutes. Determine why it took you longer - didn't you know how to approach the question (e.g. some questions call for number picking, some for other strategies) or did you mess up the calculations half way through? Also, mark questions you take exceedingly long to answer during study sessions for review (and again, determine what the problem is). This way you can determine what the problem is and what areas you have to review.
2. Plan to skip a few questions, that's what I did. During practice tests I made a habit of looking at the timer after Question 12 and Question 24. When I noticed that I was behind time I would skip the next question I didn't feel comfortable with, i.e. a question which I thought I couldn't answer quickly (I just glanced over it and if I didn't know how to approach it within 5 seconds I would simply guess the answer). I usually picked a DS question because I found PS much easier. I don't know how much time you have left until test day but you'll get better the more you practice and this should reduce the questions you have to skip.
